Capable and clever fifteen-year-old Becky Tattersall is forcibly taken to serve for three years in the Ostremeyer's city. When she learns it is a ploy designed to keep laborers there indefinitely, Becky wants both freedom and vengeance.

Risking her life to volunteer as a spy for the rebellion within the walls of the Ostremeyer's palace, Becky discovers secret technology and an unfathomable mystery that endangers her parish and the future of her world.

 

As she pieces together the mystery and uncovers hidden truths, her allegiance is tested and she is conflicted by

her opposing desires of retaliation and knowledge. Things are further complicated when she becomes involved with two powerful admirers with different agendas.
